Ukhrul, September 01 2010:
A sensitisation or awareness programme on the rights of the Nagas under the banner of the United Naga Council (UNC) Working Committee was held in Ukhrul today where many Naga leaders including former UNC chief Paul Leo, former president of All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) Kho John, social workers Gentleson Vashum, Somipam Lungleng, Gaidon and many others spoke on the occasion.
The speakers dwelt on the present state of affairs of the Nagas in Manipur.
The Naga leaders deliberated about the reasons of the current agitation sponsored of the United Naga Council and its demands.
"Alternative Arrangement" for the Nagas in Manipur was the core point of today's meeting which was held at Ukhrul Town Hall and the programme was hosted by the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL).
It was a jam-packed meeting with large number of people participating in the programme.
Some of the speakers gave the reasons as to why the Nagas are demanding for the 'alternative arrangement' by severing ties with the state government of Manipur while others dwelt on the mechanism needed for achieving the demands.
Today's programme was held at the backdrop of the UNC's demand from New Delhi for the 'alternative arrangement' for the Nagas living in Manipur.
It is worth noting that similar programmes were already held in other hill districts in recent time.
