Blockade effect : 400 vehicles stranded

Imphal, April 18 2010: Following total blockade imposed by the All Naga Students Association Manipur, (ANSAM), at least 400 State bound vehicles including inter-State passenger buses are stranded between Khuzuma in Nagaland and Mao along National Highway-39 .

Talking to The Sangai Express drivers said that the vehicles left Guwahati and Dimapur for the State as they were earlier told that the blockade was only for seven days starting April 12 .

However, it has been extended for another seven days starting midnight of April 17 .

As many of the drivers and handymen have started suffering from seasonal diseases, they are facing lots of inconveniences, being left stranded in hilly areas for long, the drivers said.

Volunteers of Surface Transport Eco and Environment Society, Nagaland, All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union and Senapati District Drivers' Welfare Union distributed medicine and ration to the stranded drivers and handymen.

On Imphal-Moreh section of the Highway, 12 buses, three trucks, four DI Tatas and five passenger Sumos and vans coming from Moreh and stranded at Thamnapokpi were escorted by a convoy of police and IRB personnel to Imphal today.

Meanwhile, most of the passengers of inter-State buses stranded at Mao reached Imphal by taxis and the buses also left for Imphal as the buses were allowed to pass without passengers, as per an official source, reports Newmai News Network.

No passenger bus left Imphal for outside destinations today.

There were no untoward incident from any part of Manipur due to the intensified blockade till the time of filing this story.

The Naga students' body has resolved to intensify the ongoing agitation on all the Highways for another seven days with effect from midnight of April 17 including the inter-State buses.

"We also have resolved to intensify our agitation until the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council (Third amendment) Act 2008 is nullified," warned the ANSAM leaders.
