Stage set for anti-terrorism rally

Imphal, Aug 22: Over forty civil society organizations have pledged to fully support the proposed peace rally scheduled for tomorrow at Imphal to denounce the terror attack on Iskcon temple on August 16 that killed five and injured scores of other devotees.

The Apunba Lup, an umbrella body of 32 different civil social bodies besides pledging to join the rally, has donated a sum of Rs 10,000 to the newly formed All Manipur Joint Action Committee (JAC) For Prevention of Terrorist Activities, the organizer of the scheduled rally said.

The amount was handed over to Ph Prama Mangangcha, co-convenor of the committee by a representative of the Apunba Lup during a media conference at the premises of Manipur Press Club here today afternoon.

Five persons were killed and over forty including Iskcon International Director Swami Damodara were injured when a powerful explosive was hurled at the Mani Mandir of Iskon where thousands of devotees were watching the Ras Leela on the occasion of Krishna Janmasthami on August 16 evening.

As already planned by the JAC the rally will be flagged off from Mani Mandir at Iskcon premises here at 8 am and will wind its way through the streets of Keishampat, Wahengbam Leikai, Nagamapal and Khoyathong and converge at THAU ground, Thangmeiband where a public meeting will be convened.

A memorandum will be also submitted to Chief Minister O Ibobi after the meeting.

A spokesman of the JAC lamented that despite the assurance given by the Chief Minister to provide monetary aid to the injured victims who are being treated at various hospitals, no such amount has been given to them.

While expressing deep concern over the failure of the State law enforcing agencies to zero in on a specific clue on the incident, the spokesman also announced of that future couse of action would be taken after consulting with the civil society organizations to pressurize the Govt to book the culprits.

The incident also exposed the inertia of the intelligence agencies, he said.

Representatives of the social bodies categorically termed the attack as an act of terrorism and a blatant attempt to cleanse the indigenous human population.

The people should stand unitedly againt any kind of such terrorist act in the future, they said.

One day ahead of the proposed rally to denounce the terror attack, the JAC distributed pamphlets all over Imphal to solicit the support and participation of the people.

Loud speakers were placed on moving vehicles and a massive mobilisation drive was launched all over Imphal today, exhorting the people to come out and condemn the incident.

Banners reading "We condemn Iskcon killing", "Stop Terrorism", "Respect secularism", "Respect right to life","Punish the culprits" etc are ready for the peace rally.
