General strike

Imphal, May 28 2011:
Normal life in Manipur remained affected today on account of the general strike called by United Committee Manipur to boycott the visit of Nagaland Chief Minister Nephiu Rio to Senapati in connection with the formal launch of the Manipur unit of Naga People's Front (NPF).
The general strike was enforced from 5 am to 6 pm today.
With exception to damaging some autorickshaws and Tata Magic ferrying passengers in Imphal area by the strike supporters, there is no report of any violence during the strike, which was by and large peaceful.
In response to the call of general strike, inter-district passenger bus services stayed off the road today and shops in Khwairamband Bazar area downed their shutters.
Schools and colleges as well as oil pumps in Imphal area also remained closed for the day.
Strike supporters also intercepted Tata Magics and autorickshaws which were ferrying passengers in defiance of the strike call at different points of Imphal East and West district like Hicham Yaichampat, Mayai Lambi, Khurai Lamlong and along Imphal Airport road and caused damages to the windshields.
