Imphal, November 09 2011:
The Just Peace Foundation is set to petition the SAARC Summit to address the growing militarisation trend as well on the issues championed by Irom Chanu Sharmila.
The SAARC Summit is scheduled to be held at Maldives tomorrow.
Drawing up their area of concern, the Just Peace Foundation said that the increasing budgetary allocation on militarisation by diverting resources from social welfare by the Governments in South Asia is a cause for worry.
Saluting the extraordinary resilience and courage of Irom Chanu Sharmila, JPY said that she has entered her 12th year of hunger strike demanding the repeal of AFSPA, which has militarised and displaced democratic governance in the North East region of India.
JPY added that it condemns the failure to take a decision to repeal the said Act inspite of several official committees and commissions of the Govt and international bodies like the UN recommending its repeal.
