Imphal, March 05 2009::
A portion of the RCC plaster of Ladies Hostel No 2 of the Manipur University ceiling broke up today.
Although a patch of the ceiling, around 3 feet in diameter broke away this morning, there was no casualty in the incident.
Taking serious note of the break down, MUSU president Ksh Narayan sought explanation from the contractors involved in constructing the building.
He observed that the ceiling break down was a clear indication of the failure to maintain proper quality in the construction of the hostel.
MU Registrar said that the break down might have been caused by inadequate watering or use of low grade sand.
Yet, he assured that the broken down portion will be repaired within a month.
Meanwhile, DESAM has also urged upon the authority concerned to repair the broken down portion within a month.
DESAM education secretary Arambam Thoithoi said that as a part of its inspection tour of educational institutions, a team of DESAM has also visited the Ladies Hostel no (2) earlier.
He observed that several portions around the broken down portion are also in bad shape.
The hostel was inaugurated in 2007. Despite several measures taken up by the Government to ensure maintenance of quality in all construction works, there has been several instances of school buildings and other structures breaking up or caving in not long after they were constructed.
