Lamka, March 10 2009:
With the Government giving no response to the hunger relay strike being launched since December 10, 2008 in pursuance of the demand for repealing Armed Forces Special Powers Act and save the life of Sharmila, the Sharmila Kanba Lup which is spearheading the agitation has decided to intensify the ongoing stir along with announcing its future course of actions.
Addressing a press conference in this regard today at Porompat PDA complex where the hunger relay strike is being held, convenor of the Sharmila Kanba Lup Janaki said detention of Sharmila on alleged charge of committing suicide under Section 309 of IPC is condemnable.
Sharmila has been fasting for more than 8 years now demanding removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Manipur.
Coming out strongly against the conduct of the State Government in lodging Sharmila in the jail instead of taking note of her agitation, Janaki announced that along with continuation of the hunger relay strike, various intense agitations would be launched like street corner campaign, poster campaign, distribution of pamphlet to exert pressure on the Government.
So far the demand is for removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Manipur, but from now onward the demand would be from the whole of North East, Janaki said.
Co-convenor Momon informed that hunger relay strike would also be staged at Wabagai Lamkhai during the Yaoshang festival.
She also appealed to all the meeting to observe two minute silence during the programme of Thabalchongba and Sports meet of Yaoshang as mark of solidarity and respect to the struggle of Sharmila and her cause.
The hunger relay strike being launched by the Sharmila Kanba Lup since December 10, 2008 completed 89 days today.
