Against the earlier plan for installing light emitting diode (LED) traffic lighting system at 17 places of Imphal area shortage of fund has brought down the number to only 10 .
The locations identified for the installation of the traffic system include Keishampat, Khoyathong, North AOC, Lamlong, Kwakeithel, Singjamei Chingamathak, Raj Bhavan point, GPO junction, western side of Kangla and MG Avenue NH-39 intersection.
According to an official source, the MAHUD department had submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Urban Development in February 2005 for installing LED traffic system at 17 places of the State capital which the Central Govt also approved and consequently earmarked an amount of Rs 193.75 lakhs out of which Rs 96.88 lakhs had been released.
It is also informed that taking into account the amount released by the Union Ministry so far the number of places had to be trimmed to only 10 .
The source further said a high level meeting under the chairmanship of Commissioner (Works) was held on October 28 which was also attended by top officials of the PWD, Traffic police, Town Planning and Transport departments.
Among other issues distance to be maintained between a traffic point from another for installation of the LED traffic lighting system was thoroughly discussed and subsequently decided to rope in experts for minute analysis of the traffic plan.
It also resolved to float an open tender at the national level and assign the task of installing the traffic system to a reputed firm.
