Raising their 'Quit CM' demand to a higher pitch, the Manipur Peoples' Party staged a rally, from three different points, converged at Keishampat junction, and then submitted a memorandum to the Governor, in absentia, to demand the resignation of the Chief Minister among others, amid the prohibitory orders imposed under CrPC 144, yesterday.
The MPP is demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister in connection with the alleged fake encounter of July 23 at BT Road.
From morning, people started converging at three points, in front of LMS Law College, in front of the office of the MPP and at Singjamei Yumnam Leikai.
As CrPC 144 is still in force, the crowd, which had gathered in front of LMS Law College, was herded to the DM College campus.
After a while, the rallyists started marching, but after covering for only about 200 metres, they were dispersed by the police.
From the MPP office, the rallyists headed north and after crossing RK Book House, proceeded to the new bridge near the old Maharani bridge then proceeded towards Waheng Leikai road to converge at Keishampat junction.
The rally was led by former president of the party, Dr L Chandramani and other leaders of the MPP.
Led by MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang, MPP Legislative Wing leader O Joy and MLA RK Anand, another rally started from Singjamei Yumnam Leikai.
From Yumnam Leikai, the rallyists proceeded to Moirangkhom and then turned towards Keishamthong and proceeded till Keishampat junction where they met the rallyists who started from the MPP office.
The rallyists were stopped by the police at Keishampat junction and after some time, a group of representatives, led by the MPP president Dr Luwang and including former president Dr L Chandramani, MLAs O Joy and RK Anand and others proceeded towards Raj Bhawan to submit the memorandum.
As the Governor was out of town, the memorandum was submitted to his secretary.
Among others, the memorandum pointed out that killing anyone without trial is unlawful, Sanjit was killed in a fake encounter, the Chief Minister should resign and the SPF Government must be dissolved.
Later speaking to newsmen at Keishampat junction, Dr Nimaichand Luwang said that the MPP will stage dharnas and burn the effigies of the Chief Minister.
The agitation will continue until the Chief Minister resigns, he asserted.
