State readies for Patriots' Day

Imphal, August 12 2009: Finishing touches were given to the statue of Thangal General at the Palace Gate road crossing to be ready for the unveiling ceremony on Patriots' Day tomorrow, while Hicham Yaichampat has been spruced up for the event tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Governor Gurbachan Jagat has greeted the people on the occasion of Patriots' Day.

Recalling the genesis of the day, the Governor said that it was on this day in 1891, that the 'great heroes of Manipur, Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General, Niranjan Subedar, Kajao and Chirai Naga-made the supreme sacrifice on the gallows for the protection of the freedom of their motherland' The Governor exhorted the people to follow their foot prints and ideals and serve the country to make the observance of Patriots' Day meaningful.

He also called upon the people to renew their pledge to uphold and strengthen the bonds of National duty and integrity and march ahead towards a peaceful and prosperous Manipur.

MPCC (I) president and MLA Gaikhangam has also greeted the people on the occasion of Patriots' Day.

Greeting the people, the Congress leader said that the observance of the day would be meaningful, if the youth dedicate themselves towards peace and development.

IGAR (S), Maj Gen AK Choudhury has also greeted the people on the occasion.

Extending a warm greeting on behalf of all ranks of Assam Rifles, the IG in a statement conveyed his wishes to the people of Manipur to prosper in all spheres of life and prayed that they join hands towards ensuring everlasting peace and development in the region.
