10 UNLF cadres held in Assam crackdown

Imphal, August 19 2010: In a major breakthrough in counter insurgency operations, ten cadres of the proscribed UNLF including two women were arrested by Guwahati City Police last night.

The UNLF cadres were arrested during the course of a search operation launched at around 11 pm at some place under Dispur police station.

According to information received from Dispur police station, 18 mobile phone handsets, five lap-tops and several incriminating documents were recovered from the possession of the UNLF cadres.

The arrested cadres include S/S Lt Col Kh Jiten, S/S Maj Maibam Sarat, S/S Captain Sinam Boy, Sandaijam Rakesh, Prem Singh, M Landhoni, Hembi Chanu, Mutum Nganba, Oinam Naresh and W Noren Singh.

All the arrested cadres were produced before the Court of the CJM, Guwahati today at 3 pm, though it is yet to be confirmed how long they have been remanded.

Self styled Captain Sinam Boy Singh, one of the arrested cadres, is said to be the commandant of 241 Bn of the UNLF.

Police sources said that some cash were also recovered from the arrested cadres, though the amount was not spelt out.

Another cadre of the UNLF was also arrested by Imphal East commandos from Thambalkhong area at about 6 am today.

A press release issued by SP Imphal East Th Radheshyam identified the arrested cadre as one Sarangthem Prembabu alias Babu Singh (34) s/o S Dolchandra of Thambalkhong Lisam Leirak.

Prembabu alias Babu also worked for the Kuki Liberation Army (KLA), it added.
