Ukhrul, June 15 2009:
A memorandum jointly signed by representatives of seven organisations in Ukhrul district was today submitted to the Governor , Gurbachan Jagat during the latter's visit to the hill district to assess the grievances of the people there.
The main points contained in the memorandum which was submitted to the Governor during a meeting held at Mini Secretariat Ukhrul, include installation and proper maintenance of the required up to date kilowatt of power supply, self governing body (Autonomous Council), SBI branch at Ukhrul Hqs and at all the sub-divisional Hqs, completion of Mini Secretariat building, old-aged home cum hostel, to look into the proposed district Court building, construction of 50-bedded hospital at Hundung within the current year, setting up of various training centres, immediate relief for Wino Bazar fire victims, hand over of old road (Lamlang Gate to New Heaven) to BRTF, blacktopping of Lambui to Nungshit Yanbi road, construction of road from Gamnoum to Kachouphung village and surrounding areas of Kamjong sub-division and improvement of Ukhrul-Tadubi road via TalluiChingmei Khullen with blacktop.
Meanwhile, taking strong exception over the deployment of IRB and Manipur police commandos in and around Ukhrul district, the TKS has asserted that such initiative should have been taken after due consultation with the civil organisations and NGOs in the district.
Maintaining that the present law and order situation does not warrant additional deployment of State security forces in and around the district, the student body appealed to the Governor to suspend such steps of the State Govt and cautioned the authority concerned that such move would only invite chaos and worsen the otherwise existing peace in the district.
The student body has also urged the authority concerned to take serious note of the people who have been hit hard by the failure of crops in the last season and acute shortage of power supply that has hampered developmental activities in the district.
