ICHAM draws eyes on economy

Amid the din and conjecture on the formation of a new Government in the State, Information Centre for Hill Areas, Manipur (ICHAM) has drawn the attention of the upcoming Government, whichever, to pay adequate attention to the improvement of the State's economy for achieving overall development.
Addressing media persons today at the Manipur Press Club, ICHAM President N Rajendro maintained that in order to achieve development of the hill and valley on an equal footing, the upcoming Government should pay enough attention for the improvement of the State's economy.
It is desirable the Government holds Cabinet meetings at all district headquarters at least once in a year and pay sufficient attention to all grievances, Rajendro conveyed.
He also urged that suitable industries be set up in the State in tune with the availability of raw material/resources.
Rajendro further urged for paying due attention to agriculture and horticulture sectors by preserving cultivable lands and setting the ball of green revolution rolling in the State.
He said tourism is one sector that needs due attention, and urged the next Government to invest in this sector which could also provide employment to thousands of unemployed youths.
Rajendro also urged for bringing in road and railways communication revolution as this occupies an important place in the development of a State.
Among others, he also urged for modernisation of National Highways, charting out ways for more road connectivity with neighbouring states, and to develop railways from Tamenglong to Ukhrul and Churachandpur to Senapati.
Against the backdrop of problems faced by the people due to non-existence of transport system, restoration of MSRTC should be considered, the ICHAM president conveyed.
He also drawn attention for paying attention to equip schools in the hill areas with adequate staff and to raise the level and standard of education in government schools to that of private schools.
He also focused on introduction of major languages of the State to school children in order to cultivate emotional integrity among them.
Rajendra also called for ensuring power supply in the state for at least 12 hours a day.
He added that formulating proper planning in the power sector and to give priority to the Power Sector in the budget should also be considered.
Stressing on the need to maintain transparency in the functioning of the Tribal Development Department, he urged the need to start ombudsmen system in the TD Department.
Further, the ICHAM president urged for the need to take stringent measure in providing security to people residing in far-off places and to imbibe a sense in them that there is rule of law.
He suggested that posting sincere policemen in the area could help in achieving the measure.
