Continuing the protest against the July 23 fake encounter at Kwairamband Bazar, which left two persons killed and five others wounded, a large number of womenfolk took out a rally at Keithelmanbi today even as a group of women protestors staged a Wakat Meepham at the Wangkhei residence of MLA of Yaiskul A/C E Kunjakeshore.
However, security personnel fired tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse the protestors.
Organised jointly by Kabui, Meetei and Kuki Apunba Lup, New Keithelmanbi; Rongmei Luphum (Rongmei Women's Organisation), Assam, Manipur and Nagaland and Meira Paibi Apunba Lup, New Keithelmanbi, the protest rally began from New Keithelmanbi Market shed at around 12.30 pm.
Holding placards inscribed with slogans like 'Punish the guilty police commandos', 'Resign Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh', 'We want peace', 'Stop fake encounters at once', 'Release arrested members of Apunba Lup unconditionally', etc, unconditionally', etc, the slogan shouting rallyists were proceeding along the New Cachar Road and heading towards Patsoi Police Station, when the security personnel fired tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse them at Moidangpokpi.
After being dispersed, the protestors regrouped at New Keithelmanbi Bazar where they strongly condemned the action of the security personnel.
They also reaffirmed their pledge of launching more intense agitation until the demands of the public with regard to punishment of the police commandos involved in the July 23 incident, resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh on moral ground and unconditional release arrested activists of the Apunba Lup are fulfilled.
Meanwhile, a group of women protestors today descended at the Wangkhei residence of MLA of Yaiskul A/C E Kunjakeshore and staged a Wakat Meepham over the Khwairamband Bazar incident of July 26.The women protestors were, however, dispersed by the police later on.
On the other hand, in response to the call of the JAC formed in connection with the killing of Sanjit, a large number of people today defied curfew and staged protest along Khurai Tinsid Road.
They also shouted slogans demanding punishment of the guilty police commandos, resignation of Chief Minister and unconditional release of the arrested protestors.
In defiance of curfew, effigies of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and DGP Y Joykumar were also reportedly set aflame at Sawombung Sairem Kabui Khunou and Lamlai Challou Bazar.
