Imphal, August 05 2009:
With the exception of the ruling coalition Congress and CPI, the Manipur People's Party (MPP) has given a clarion call to other political parties for jointly sustaining the ongoing movement against police atrocities related to the July 23 BT Road firing wherein two persons, including a pregnant woman, died and five others were injured.
Speaking to newspersons today, newly elected MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang also called upon all political parties to shed differences and extend cooperation to NGOs spearheading the current movement.
Recounting that regional political organisations, based on the visual evidences provided by the Tehelka news weekly, regarding alleged excesses of police commandos, had already highlighted inhumane conduct of the security force, Dr Nimaichand said that fax copies pointing out police atrocities have been sent to Central leaders.
copies of the complaint memorandum were reportedly faxed today to the Prime Minister, union Home Minister, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, LK Advani.
The MPP representation is said to contain demand for instituting a Judicial probe to establish the facts of the BT Road firing, register FIR case, rope in services of CBI sleuths to investigate the incident, suspend commando personnel involved in the firing, extend ex-gratia to family members of the victims and dismissal of the SPF Government.
the former MLA confided to newspersons at the MPP office of the political outfit's plan to stage sit-in-protest tomorrow in denunciation of the massacre of civilians by the law enforcing agency, besides launching sensitisation campaigns on the peoples' movement.
Pledging MPP's unconditional support to any public movement launched by civil society organisations, he reiterated that barring Congress and CPI, leaders of other political groups have been consulted to chalk-out further course of action on the raging issue.
Dr Nimaichand also proclaimed that leaders of those political parties, whom MPP representatives had met, have consented to sustain the movement.
Describing the ongoing public agitation as democratic and justifiable, he conveyed that MPP strongly condemns State Govt's decision to impose curfew with the intention of subjugating the peoples' movement through use of brutal police force.
Suggesting that rather than rely on brute police force to crack down the movement suspending police commandos involved in the BT road firing would be more appreciable, he also cautioned that testing tolerance and might of the masses would be disastrous in case people decide to march out to the street in defiance of the prohibitory order.
