Imphal, May 21 2009:
A team of State Women Commission led by its chairperson Dr Ch Jamini today inspected the condition of the women lodging at short stay home for the destitute womenat Nongmeibung Rajbari.
Around 20 widow and orphan girls are staying at the home currently.
They are engaging in preparation of edibles, making cloths and embroidery etc.
as earning way to their livelihood.
The chairperson, during the team visit, apart from encouraging the women staying there also distributed gifts and monetary assistances.
In exchange, inmates also gifted the chairperson and her team mates.
Speaking to reporters, Dr Jamini said that the number of widows, women ill-treated by their families and husbands, orphans approaching the commission for providing shelter are on the raise but as the commission has no provision to provide such facilities, they are unable to help them.
The commission has submitted a proposal for proving shelters for such women to the government but so far no positive response coming up, she added.
The commission which was set up for the purpose of hearing and solving problems of women like violation of their rights and from domestic violence could not perform its duty effectively due to the shortest of staffs and infrastructures.
However, the commission is trying its best to improve its services, she said.
The office of the commission itself is also attaching at the DC office of Imphal west at Lamphel.
It has no court room, library, toilet etc.
there is no adequate rooms for the legal advisors, members apart from not posting computer operator, accountant, head clerk etc.
This has caused various inconveniences in functioning the commission, she added.
