Imphal, August 28 2011:
On the occasion of his death anniversary, the proscribed RPF has offered tributes to Haipou Jadonang.
Haipou Jadonang, born to Kabui community, was a martyr who fought valiantly against the British colonial rule to win back people's freedom, the outfit remarked in a press release issued by its Publicity Secretary T Leisemba.
Born in 1905 at Kambiron (Puilon) village in Tamenglong district, Haipou Jadonang was the youngest son of Thidai Malangmei and Tabonliu.
He was the first son of the soil who stood up openly and fought bravely against British colonial rule in the hill areas of Manipur.
The then Political Agent of Manipur JC Higgins arrested Jadonang from Cachar on February 19, 1931 on the charges of working against the British rule.
He was tortured and sent to Imphal Jail on March 31, 1931 .
Based on several unfounded charges, Haipou, then only 26 years old, was hangeg to death on Nambul river bank behind Imphal jail on August 29, 1931 .
A memorial park has been dedicated to him near the Keishamthong power house.
Even though Jadonang was martyred at a very young age, his sacrifices and exploits continue to shine in the memory of all the Manipuri people.
The outfit called upon all communities of the State to understand the divisive policies of the adversarial forces and follow the foot steps of the martyrs and freedom fighters
of yesteryears.
"Let tens of thousands of Jadonangs take birth in Manipur", the outfit prayed.
Jadonang, along with Rani Gaidinliu is regarded as one of the earliest figures from the Zeliangrong community to raise the banner of revolt against the British.
