In remembrance of the recognition of Khengjoi as a block headquarters in 1983 (Chandel district), a commemorative function was held on December 14 with local MLA Thangkholun Haokip as chief guest.
The function held at Khengjoi village was also attended by Chandel ADC Lunminthang Haokip, Khengjoi village chief Thongkhothang Haokip, Pradhan of Pangaltabi village Ningthoujam Nando and DRDA Chandel Executive Engineer L Sarat as presidium members.
At the beginning of the function, Thangkholun unveiled the foundation stone for Khengjoi TD Block laid by Chief Minister O Ibobi at Tengnoupal on December 14 last year.
Speaking on the occasion, Thangkholun said that the TD Block whose estimated cost is Rs 1 crore is expected to be completed by 2008.The construction is being funded by the Rural Development Ministry.
The DRDA Chandel will look after the construction work, he said while noting that the people will greatly benefit once the block office is constructed.
The MLA also appealed to the villagers to extend moral support towards the construction work.
Later, the MLA inspected several sites in and around Khengjoi village, located about 101 kms from Tengnoupal along New Somtal road, to take up agriculture development works and water supply schemes for the local people.
From the New Somtal road constructed by security forces to facilitate their efforts to drive off UG elements, Khengjoi is just about 5/6 kms.
As the road is still not fit for passenger vehicles, plans are being made to reach Khengjoi through Saibol/Joupi, said Thangkholun.
The construction work of the road will be taken up soon under 6th phase of the PMGSY, he said.
Going on foot, the MLA also inspected the area where the proposed road should pass through.
Moreover, a proposal has also been submitted to the Tourism Ministry to build a tourist home at Lamyeng hills, located along the road from Saibol Joupi to Chakpikarong, the MLA said.
The hill was named Lamyeng for it was from here Manipuri king Chandrakirti and Mompi village chief Ngulkhup Haokip took a view of the surrounding areas, Thangkholun explained.
The MLA culminated his visit to his home constituency with a field inspection of the ongoing development work of the 14 kms long road from Chakpikarong to Mompi being taken up under PMGSY.
The MLA also attended the 1st Gospel Olympic camp at Tolbung village as the chief guest.
The camp started on December 10 and concluded on December 15.
