Imphal, August 07 2009:
Locals of Yurembam and its surrounding area in Imphal west district today carried out a protest rally after staging a sit-in protest against the government plan for taking over 25.876 acres of cultivable land for the installation of 400 KV sub-station of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited.
Around 500 people participated in the protest rally organized under the banner of the Yurembam, Patsoi, Toubungkhok Lanf Protection Demand Committee (YPTLPDC).
Placards with slogans like "Lands are our soul, no powerful sub-station to the thickly populated area, no to take over of cultivable land," etc.
were displayed during the protest.
Stating that the currently straight overhead cable for the 132 KV power sub-station is also dangerous as electric shocks sometimes occurred when travel with a umbrella in the rain beneath the naked cable wires, they lamented that if more powerful sub-station comes up, it be more dangerous for the people moving under the overhead cables.
The protestors also said that they will fight unto death if government attempted to install the more powerful sub-station by forcibly takes land.
