Imphal, August 04 2009: The indefinite Chaka bandh on National Highway 39 and 53 by the All Manipur Inter-state Bus Association (AMISBA), Manipur Drivers' Welfare Association (MDWA), Imphal-Silchar Road Transporters' Welfare Society (ISRTWS), and All Manipur Petroleum Tanker Drivers' Union (AMPTDU) has come into effect from midnight today.

A joint statement issued by the four transporters' and drivers' unions has sought cooperation from all concerned.

It stated that the unions have been forced to launch the agitation to protest the failure of the government in fulfilling their demands.

The statement said that a memorandum was submitted by the unions on March 16 demanding the setting up of highway protection force and improvement of conditions of the two roads.

A reminder was also submitted on July 23.However, no response has been coming so far from the government.

The unions' statement has also demanded the resignation of the CM for his failure to improve the roads.
