Imphal, January 27 2009:
EVEN AS the 60th Republic Day celebrations were held with different contingents taking part in the march past, and the national flag fluttering high in Imphal amidst tight security yesterday, elsewhere in over 200 places in the state, groups of people staged protest demonstrations against the same, and burnt the national flag and copies of the Indian constitution.
At the protest demonstrations held at different places, the protesters shouted various slogans, such as "We reject Indian constitution, Down with Indian colonisation, We want freedom, Indian colonisation is invalid, Put an end to Indian colonial rule, etc".
Such demonstrations in protest against the Republic Day or Independence Day celebrations have been regular features in Manipur since nearly three decades.
It is worth recalling here that Manipur police had arrested some women for having burnt the National flag and copies of Indian constitution on the Republic Day last year, and were detained in the prisons under National Security Act (NSA) .
