Imphal, March 08, 2010:
Manipur hunger striker Irom Chanu Sharmila Devi was released Tuesday evening from the security ward of Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, Porompat, Imphal East district.
Notably, she is being released after the completion of one year from the day she was re-arrested last year which has been going on since the year 2000. Upon her release Sharmila Devi expressed concern over the 'unchanged political scenario' of Manipur.
She maintained that no changes in the political scenario of the state can be seen since she had begun her agitation.
She has been fasting since the Malom massacre in the year 2000 demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA-1958) from the whole of Manipur.
While criticizing the increase killing cases in the state, Sharmila said that some people are crazy after killing people.
She also revealed that during her stay in New Delhi, she came to know the disliking of the chief minister O.Ibobi Singh by the people in the national capital.
While expressing her diminishing faith on the government, Irom Sharmila stated that she is living on her own conscience.
Meanwhile, after her release today, Sharmila Devi joined the Sharmila Kanba Lup (Save Sharmila Movement) at PDA complex in Imphal where women folks have been staging relay hunger strike since two years ago.
Sharmila Kanba Lup is an organisation formed in December 2008 where several women have been fasting supporting Sharmila Devi in her cause.
The police is likely to re-arrest Sharmila Devi on Tuesday morning charging her of attempting to commit suicide ( fast unto-death agitation).
