Imphal, August 10 2009:
Experts say that consuming coke or cold drinks before or after consumption of Mentos (candy) is dangerous as cyanide is formed by chemical reaction in the stomach which may cause death.
While cautioning people consuming the candy (Mentos) preferably and also advertising to the media to attract consumers, a leaflet circulated by Prof, Dr Rima Dada, MD, PhD (Genetics), Department of Anatomy, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and Prof TS Roy, MD, PhD, Department of Anatomy of the same institute among their close associates, colleagues and relatives, stated that not only the Mentos brand candy, many other edible items of branded companies were also found containing various chemicals which are hazardous to health when consumed.
Among the items are Appy Fizz, Kurkure.
"Don't drink Appy Fizz, it contains cancer causing agents" it warned adding that Kurkure contains high amount of plastic.
If you don't believe it, burn Kurkure and you can see plastic melting, the leaflet stated.
The experts also appealed for avoiding D Cold, Vicks Action-500, Actifed, Coldarin, Cosome, Nice, Nimulid, Cetrizet-D citing that these tablets contain phenyl, propanol-amide PPA which cause strokes.
These tablets are banned in USA, they warned.
In the leaflet, the two experts further cautioned while using mobile phone and cotton ear buds.
Don't put the mobile closer to ears until the recipient answers, because directly dialing the mobile phone would use its maximum signaling power which is 2 watts equivalent to 33 dbi.
"Please be careful.
Please use left ear while using cell (mobile), because if you use the right one it may affect brain directly.
This is a true fact from Apollo medical team," they stated.
While cautioning on the use of cotton ear buds sold on the streets or at signal points, the experts revealed that packs of ear buds bought from them are made of cotton that had already been used in hospitals.
They collect the dirty, bloody and pus-filled cotton, wash it, bleach it and use it to make ear buds.
So, if you want to become the first person in the world to get Herpes Zoster Oticus (a viral infection of the inner, middle, and external) of the ears and that too from a cotton bud, don't buy them, they warned.
Commenting on the leaflet, Director of State Medical Directorate W Motilal said, the state health authority is yet to receive any intimation from any authority, but assured that he will hold consultation on the matter with the experts of the state on August 12 .
It is pertinent to mention that there had been instances of hospitalising people after consumption of Appy juice and other soft drinks and also some packets of edibles imported from outside the state causing health hazard.
