Imphal, March 18 2013:
A day-long awareness programme for farmers was organized by Chingtam Loumi Lup under the sponsorship of Agriculture Department, Government of Manipur at Wakha Community Hall in Imphal East today.
Parliamentary Secretary Amin Shah, who was present on the occasion as Chief Guest, stated that instead of depending on outside products to meet our daily needs, we should think of innovative ways and use scientific technology to increase agricultural products of the State.
He further stated that vested interested individuals have been misusing the names of farmers to enjoy all the benefits and privileges given to farmers.
These individuals acquire all the materials provided by the government forthe farming community and later sell them away to earn huge profit.
We need to put an end to this trend and help the farmers and making the fields yield more.
Ph Rajendro, Deputy Director of Agriculture Department, who was also present on the occasion as one of the Guests of Honour, stated that with construction of houses, government offices and educational institutions on the available arable lands of the State increasing at an alarming rate over the last couple of decades, it is quite certain that there would be not much land left to plant paddies and other agricultural products.
As a result, the productivity of land in the State would also reduce considerably.
He pointed out that out of the total arable land of around 2.34 lakh hectares in Manipur, only 1.35 lakh hectares are presently being used for agricultural purposes.
The inaugural function of today's awareness programme was also attended by Namoijam Tomba, member of LUCANIL; Anwari Nur Jahan, Vice President of CLL as Guests of Honour.
