Imphal, November 09 2011:
As set up in parts of the country, there is an urgent need to set up a permanent Lok Adalat in Manipur, retired Justice of Gauhati High Court Maibam Binoykumar has pointed out.
He was speaking at the occasion of Legal Services Day observance held under the aegis of Manipur State Legal Services Authority at Uripok Cheirap Court complex here today.
Binoykumar observed that legal aid service should no more be considered a charity of the government because to get legal service is the right of every citizen in the country.
Moreover, there is the need on the part of legal Service authorities to take pro-active role in deliverance of justice to the people instead of just confining within the office rooms and wait for those who are in need to legal aid to come.
Embracing the concept of 'Justice on wheel', they should come out and spread legal awareness among the people, the retired justice suggested.

It is also high time in Manipur to have a permanent Lok Adalat, where cases involving monetary value up to Rs 10 lakh could be not only settled but could also take a final decision when two contending parties are in irreconcilable position, Bijoykumar proposed, and added that such facilities could not be assured in any Lok Adalat sitting, which is held only for a day and that also once in a while.
Chairman of Manipur Legal Service Authority and Judge of Gauhati High Court T Nandakumar presided over the function today, which was attended by former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court RK Manisana as Chief Guest.
MLA of Uripok A/C and senior advocate L Nandakumar and retired Judge of Gauhati High Court H Kaminikumar were also present at the occasion as Guests of Honour.
As part of the observance, the bi-monthly news letter of Manipur State Legal Service Authority and a souvenir were released.
