District and Session Judge, Manipur East, Th Surbala and her team today conducted spot inquiry in the nine year old Malom incident in which 10 civilians were killed in indiscriminate firing by the Assam Rifles in the aftermath of an ambush launched by undergrounds.
On November 2, 2000, troops of 8 Assam Rifles fired indiscriminately towards a group of civilians at the bus waiting shed at Malom along the Tidim road killing 10 civilians apart from inflicting injuries to several others.
Following a directive of the Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench in 2004 and 2005, the district and session judge has been conducting an enquiry into the incident.
The spot enquiry was conducted today by Th Surbala, District and Session Judge along with official team comprising of the investigating officer, CID inspector and the parties of the petitioners and the respondents.
This Malom incident has its significance as the hunger striker Irom Sharmila Chanu was prompted to take the drastic step by the incident.
Th Surbala along with the team, Rameshwor, investigating officer and the CID inspector (SB) investigated the firing site (bus stand) at Malom area and the firing that took place in the area where the incident took place.
In the spot enquiry, the witnesses of the incident, T.Somorendro, K.Memcha, Subadini, L.Tomba, Apaba Singh and Chandrajini were present.
It is worth mentioning that the Malom massacre occurred on November 2, 2000 which had killed atleast 10 civilians including students and women in the Assam Rifles firing.
The deceased persons were L Sana Devi (60), G Bap Sharma (50), O Sanayaima (50), K Bijoy (35) A Raghumani (34), S Robinson Singh (27), Ksh Inaocha (23), T Shantikumar (19), S Prakash Singh (18), S Chandramani (17) .
