Troops of 8 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector under HQ IGAR(S) carried out a sustained campaign to destroy illegal Poppy plantations in the remote and inaccessible areas of various mountain ridges along the Indo - Myanmar border from 14 Feb to 22 Feb 10 in collaboration with the State Narcotics and Affairs of Border Department.
The troops burned and hacked down the Poppy cultivation in the area of Khaikual and Houpi in Churachandpur district and Khongtal, Chahjol and Thingbajao in Chakpikarong sub division of Chandel district.
Approximately 235 hectares of poppy cultivation amounting to Rs.5,12,00,000/- was destroyed in a week long campaign by 8 Assam Rifles.
As per the Narcotics representative the net value of poppy destroyed was 15-20 times more than in the international markets.
In the recent past, troops of 26 Sector Assam Rifles have been reaching out to the people of the remote and inaccessible areas to impress upon the ill effects of poppy/ganja cultivation and spreading awareness amongst locals on the harmful effects of drug abuse.
