Locals caught and beaten up two extortionists who fired guns blue and black and handed over to police this evening at Wangkhei under Porompat police station of Imphal east district.
The two youths coming to collect money were identified as Leitanthem Premjit (18) son of Devan of Kongpal Mutum Leikai and Nongthonbam Amuthoi alias Thoiba (23) son of Dhiren of Soibam Leikai Khamlabung.
They claimed themselves to be members of an underground group.
Locals of Wangkhei tokpam Leikai, Nandeibam Leikai and Thangjam Leikai caught them and beaten up before handing over to the police.
According to the locals, the around five miscreants fired a round of gun at the gate of one Waikhom Rajen of Wangkhei Tokpam Leikai this evening at about 7 pm.
Locals nearby the place who were there chased after them as soon as they heard the gun firing sound.
Some of them escaped while two of them were caught and beaten up.
They also snatched a 9 m pistol.
Locals got angry with the shooting as some time back also such instance of firing gun at occurred at the same place.
Some time back, some youths said to be members of a particular underground group while stating that Rajen has four shops demanded Rs 70, 000 each for each shop.
They also given a mobile no.written on a piece of paper to contact them for payment.
When Rajen informed them that he has only two shops, they again demanded Rs 80,000 but he refused to pay it and insisted to take Rs 50,000. When he offered the money, they refused to take it and instead warned him of killing, locals said.
The two youths handed over by the police have been evacuated by the police at Imphal Hospital for medical treatment, report said.
