Imphal, July 28 2009:
Commemorating the exem plary courage and ultimate sacrifice made by Pebam Chittaranjan for the people of Manipur, the Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) would be observing the fifth death anniversary of Pebam Chittaranjan at Bishnupur Bazar on August 16 in association with other organisations.
A press release issued by MSF observed that one legislation which has been instrumental in numerous cases of killings, rapes and other forms of human rights has been the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 .
Noting that the people of Manipur have been under taking various mass move ments against State and Central Governments to repeal the draconian Act, the MSF asserted that Chittaranjan's sacrifice was one of the most outstanding chapters in the history of people's movement against the inhuman Act.
Chittaranjan self-immolated himself on August 15, 2004 when other parts of the country were celebrating Independence Day of India.
He succumbed to the injuries at RIMS on the next day.
His ultimate sacrifice told
the stories of suppression and human rights violation being suffered by the people of Manipur to the world.
Irom Chanu Sharmila has also been fighting valiantly for the people of Manipur and their rights.
She has been fasting unto death sin ce 2000 demanding
repeal of the same draconian Act.
The also sought donation in cash and kind towards organising the death anniversary function of Manipur's Human Torch, Pebam Chittaranjan.
