Imphal, September 14, 2009:
Four districts of Manipur have been included among the 365 districts of India selected for the implementation of the National Mission for Literacy of Women which aimed at all women ability to read and write during the 11th five year plan in four districts of the state.
The four districts are Thoubal, Chandel, Senapati and Temenglong, said an official source from the state Directorate of Adult Education.
These districts are among the districts across the country which have women literacy rate below 55 percent.
In the country even though, campaigns under several schemes for making ability to read and write have been conducted in the last around 21 years, the objectives of the campaign could not achieved satisfactorily.
Only 22.27 percent increase was detected during 20 years from 1981 to 2001 in the country's literacy rate.
That is literacy rate which was 43.57 percent in 1981 increased to only 65.84 percent in 2001 as per the census report.
More unfortunate thing was that of gulf of difference in the male-female literacy rate.
When the male literacy rate is 75 percent in all India level, the rate of female literacy was only 54 percent.
Around 60 million female are illiterate.
The results for low female literacy rate has been cited as reduction in the number of girls going to school, school education, health, nutrition, skill development and women empowerment.
However, according to the officials of the state directorate of adult education, they have been successfully implementing total literacy campaign along with post literacy campaign.
Under the campaign 1,74,698 have been imparted ability to read and write.
Out of this 1,10332 are female.
