Imphal, August 10 2009:
The working Committee of the Apunba Lup (WCAL) today announced that it will once again try to submit a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur at 11 am tomorrow, August 11, and appealed to the people to take the rallies from all directions facing all kinds of obstructions in a democratic manner towards the Governor's bungalow in time.
A press release of the WCAL stated that the people's movement being continued at present is against the Khwairamband market killings by police commandos on July 23, and in demand of awarding exemplary punishment to the responsible police officers who are trying to cover up the killings and also against the irresponsible statement given by the Chief Minister of Manipur.
However, instead of heeding to the people's desire and grievances, the government of Manipur is unleashing a reign of terror and torture among the people, the press release said.
The WCAL criticised the government for imposing indefinite curfew that makes lakhs of poor and hand-to-mouth people face untold miseries.
But when one or two organisations call one or two-day bandh in the interest of the people or against incidents of violation of human rights, the organisers are hunted down branding them as anti-social elements or enemies of the people or terrorists and beaten them up black and blue like animals and detained them under NSA, the press release lamented.
It also criticised the police excesses in repressing the movement by firing tear gas, rubber bullets, mock bombs and even live bullets, and also pulling the people out of their houses, make them lie on their stomach in a line on the ground and thrash them, and shoot in the face that makes young boy lose his eyesight, etc.
Since 2002 when O Ibobi became the Chief Minister, his government has become the only one which has successfully killed the highest number people, the WCAL charged and added that let all people join hands to eradicate the Congress government from the soil of Manipur.
