Infuriated people of Lilong blocked Imphal-Moreh road for sometime , throwing traffic out of gear, and stormed Lilong police station today over the arrest of five students of Lilong Haoreibi College by a combined team of Thoubal police commandos and troops of 21 Assam Rifles.
The five college students identified as BM Farooq Ahmad, Md Anisur Rehman, Md Naseer Hussain, Md Riyaj Khan and Md Naseer Ahmad were apprehended by the combined force from Sora yesterday afternoon.
Besides seizing the car in which they were travelling, the students were held in the custody of the security forces for the whole night during which the students were allegedly subjected to severe torture.
Moreover, the combined force confiscated mobile phones and cash from the students.
Meanwhile, the Lilong Haoreibi College Students' Union has strongly condemned the incident.
A press release issued by the union demanded commensurate punishment to those security personnel involved in the incident by December 16 and also to foot medical bills incurred during treatment of the wounded students.
It warned that severe forms of agitation will be launched in case the same demands are not met within the deadline set.
On the other hand, a huge crowd of people stormed Lilong police station demanding immediate release of the arrested students around 9 am today.
They also blocked Imphal-Moreh road.
The uproar subsided only when officers of Lilong PS gave assurance to secure release of the students.
Later, a public meeting was held in connection with the arrest of the five college students.
