At least three villages of Henglep Sub-Division in this southern district have been hit by an outbreak of malaria since the last part of September and the disease has claimed the lives of 8 within two weeks.
C Munpi, Bungkot and Gouthang villages that roughly house 70 households came under the outbreak of Malaria since September 28 and already 8 children all below the age of sixteen have succumbed to the disease.
The disease was detected only after 16 villagers, all of whom were tested positive, were brought to the district hospital here for treatment yesterday.
The ailing villagers were identified as Chochong (11), Paumilun (7), Letminlun (23), Nuonuom (30) Nuamneilhing (2� ) Lhingneichong (29), Nemneithiem (15), Hoineilem (8), Hauthianjem (8), Satkhotinlal (13), Nemzaching (20), Letminmang (7) Kimneiching (4), Chiinneilhing (12) and Nemneingak (8).A hurriedly summoned medical team headed by Chief Malaria Officer along with volunteers of KSO today rushed to the affected villagers, but it was not known whether they will be able to reach the villages today as the team has to trek more than 20 kms by foot.
Even as the medical team equipped with mosquito nets, DDT and numerous medication left for the affected villages another set of ailing villagers identified as Nemboi 22, Minthang 20, Lhingbem 16, Tangneo 13, Henminlun 11 and Niengboi 2, arrived here later today and were immediately tested at MSF clinic.
Besides the additional six patients, KSO leaders claimed that at least three more patients are on their way here for treatment.
