Imphal, December 07:
Irom Chanu Sharmila, who has been detained in a room of the New Private Ward of AIIMS after she was arrested by the Delhi police from Jantar Mantar while continuing her six-year long fast against the prolonged imposition of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 in Manipur, was produced in the Delhi High Court today.
The Delhi police, however, denied having arrested any woman by the name of Irom Chanu Sharmila, though there is an FIR case against a woman who has been fasting against Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 for the last six years.
According to information received from New Delhi, Sharmila was produced in the Court following the petition filed by her brother Irom Singhajit requesting the Court to spell out the exact position and status of his sister who has been in the custody of Delhi Police since her arrest from Jantar Mantar.
Acting on the petition, the Court had asked the Delhi Police to produce Sharmila in the Court.
However, during the hearing of the case today, the Delhi Police denied having arrested any woman by the name of Irom Chanu Sharmila though there is an FIR in connection with a protestor who has been fasting for the last six years in protest against Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958.Counsel of the petitioner advocate Mrs Prity of Human Rights Law Network argued that if the Delhi Police have not arrested Sharmila at all then why she is not allowed to go from AIIMS even after the hospital authorities have discharged her.
Further hearing of the case would be held on December 15.It may be noted here that Sharmila was picked up by Delhi Police from Jantar Mantar at around 11 pm of October 6 last and taken to AIIMS.
Since then, armed personnel of Delhi Police have been keeping vigil near the room where Sharmila is being detained day and night apart from maintaining a register to record the details of any person who come to meet her.
One lady Delhi police personnel has been keeping a close watch over every activity of Sharmila inside her room.
Singhajit has termed the denial of the Delhi police who have been keeping her sister in their custody as an attempt of the India Government to befool the International community.
'We have to see how far can India Government continue to suppress my sister and her right cause.
There would be a limit surely.
Till then we have no other hope', Singhajit said.
Back home, demanding withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 from Manipur and saving the life of Irom Chanu Sharmila who has been on fast unto death agitation for more than six years now protesting against the prolonged imposition of the draconian Act, Chingamakha Liwa Lambi Ningthoujam Leikai Women Welfare Association organised a Wakat Meepham at Chingmakha Liwa Lambi Ningthoujam Leikai today.
The protest demonstration attended by around 100 local residents was held from 10 am to 4 pm.
