Violent altercation between localities of Kwakta Santhong and Kwakta Khunou under Moirang police station in Bishnupur district ensued this evening prompting the District Magistrate to impose indefinite curfew from 8pm today in order to contain the highly charged up tension.
Though the cause of the incident could not be ascertained officially, a reliable source revealed that it all began when both localities detained member each of the two groups.
Sensing that the incident could breach peace and tranquility in the area, the District Administration has imposed the curfew.
According to the source, a brawl ensued between two individuals of the localities today around 6.15pm over usurping of water in their fields.
Following the incident, some persons have detained one Md.Salimuddin (25).He was said to be subjected to interrogation by members of a club.
On learning the incident, residents of Kwakta Santhong rose in angst demanding the immediate release of the detained individual.
Since their demand was not fulfilled immediately, Kwakta Santhong locals have invented rumour mills that the detained person has been killed.
The locals have exaggerated the matter by shouting on mic and raising the alarm by ringing electric posts.
On learning that the incident was threatening peace in the area, a police team of the Bisnupur police led by its Superintendent of Police and OC of Moirang Police Station rushed to the site to pacify the highly charged up tension.
Police have resorted to fire tear gas shells, rubber bullets and some rounds of gunshot, the source further said.
It has also been learnt that some people have suffered rubber bullet injuries.
The tension was heightened when a person identified as Thongbam Kesho was said to be detained by the other group.
However, with the reinforcement of additional police commandos and IRB personnel, the tension was said to be under control.
It has been further learnt that the whereabouts of both the two persons - allegedly detained by each group - are unknown till the time of filing this story.
