Present generation should promote Indian dances: Governor

It should be the bounded duty of the present generation to preserve and promote the Indian dances, strerssed Gurbachan Jagat, Governor of Manipur while speaking on the occasion of the inauguration of the dance performances of the IX Bhagyachandra National Festival 2011 held at the Shri Shri Govindaji Temple complex, Kangla, today.
Gurbachan Jagat further said that dance and music which is an integral part of culture and tradition of any civilization has evolved through the ages and are a part and parcel of human life.
The dance we see today is the culmination of work carried out in the past one century.
The idea of organizing this festival was conceived during 1989 with the idea of placing the festival on the cultural map of India in the line of much acclaimed Konark and Khajuraho Festivals.
The festival will hopefully prove to be a silken thread to bind the people of Manipur with those of the other parts of the country and also as one of the key factors for national understanding and integration, he said.
He further went on to say that organizing a festival of any kind provides a good opportunity to the participants for displaying their talents and also to come together and exchange ideas and experience in their respective fields.
The function was also attended by Dr Rk Nimai, Commissioner, Art and Culture, GoM and Dr K Sobita, Director, Art and Culture, GoM.
Thokchom Ibemu and Elam Indira presented the Manipuri Classical solo, Kuchipudi by Vedantam Venkata Naga Chalapathi Rao and Sattriya by Anita Sharma.
