Imphal, August 10 2009:
Four leaders of Apunba Lup who were arrested by Manipur Police on August 4 were detained under National Security Act (NSA) today.
The authorities accused them of spearheading the anti-government protest demanding resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi.
With the expiry of the remand period, they were produced before the Additional CJM at her residence at Lamphel under heavy security deployment today.
Police prayed the Magistrate to remand them in police custody for 15 days.
Police charged them of breaching peace and tranquility which posed a great danger to human lives and properties.
When police took them from the court, they shouted slogans like "Stop fake encounter, stop killing people, long live Manipur," etc.
Before producing them in the court, the Imphal West District Magistrate earlier issued orders for detaining four of the leaders excluding the lone woman member under the NSA, official source said.
The five leaders of the WCAL spearheading the agitation against killing people in fake encounter by the police commandos, were arrested by the police on August 4 .
The five leaders of the WCAL are former coordinators of WCAL and president of the National Identity Protection Committee (NIPCO) Karam Sunil, AMUCO's Organisation Secretary, Phurailatpam Deban, member of WCAL and Publicity Secretary of AMUCO, Dayananda Chingtham, Assistant Secretary of Apunba Lup and member of AMUCO, Thounaojam Surjit and Secretary of Kwakeithel Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, Leimapokpam Nganbi.
