There is no practice of Sati in Manipur, and no dowry system exists in the state, media expert Seram Mangi told the women journalists from across the country here today.
Interacting with women journalists who came from different parts of the country to attend the National Meeting of Women in Media Network, India in Imphal, the former news editor of All India Radio, Imphal and presently Chairman of Media Cell, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, Seram Mangi appealed to the visiting women journalists to write and report on the role of women in Manipur in the right perspective.
He told the journalists that the women of Manipur are steadfast in their commitment to their role in the society.
They have been taking a major role in moulding the society, he said.
In the long history of Manipur, there has never been the pactice of Sati, except for one historical incident, in Manipur, Seram Mangi told the visiting women journalists numbering around 50. Regarding dowry system, the senior media expert said, though some rich parents give their daughters dowry as much as they can, there is no compulsory rule or tradition in Manipur that dowry must be given at any cost.
The interaction programme was held at the Retreat House at Mantripukhri.
