Imphal, June 15 2009:
A delegation of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, New Delhi led by its chairperson Urmila Singh arriving in the state for three days visit today reviewed projects and schemes taken up for the welfare and development of the tribal in the state.
The delegation comprising vice president Muarice Kujur and member Syiem Myriaw arrived in the state capital yesterday.
They will leave Imphal by tomorrow.
The visiting delegation held a round of review meeting with the officials of the state government.
State chief secretary, Rakesh, additional chief secretary, DS Poonia, DGP, Y Joykumar, commissioners, directors and engineers of the sectors concern also attended the review meeting held at the conference hall of the Old Secretariat Building.
The meeting apart from reviewing on the response of the state government to the clarification sought by the representatives of the tribal bodies also discussed on the schemes and projects taken by the state government in the fields of education, forest, water supply, rehabilitation, irrigation and tribal reservation policy.
Provision of the security protection to the tribal people residing in the interior areas of the state and providing special protection to them was also discussed in the meeting.
From the commission side, it was reportedly observed for taking up education coaching prograame and literacy identification programmes.
After the meeting, the delegation visited the tribal Research Institute located at Chingmeirong.
Earlier, the delegation also padi a visit at Longmai (Noney) of Tamenglong district and inspected the villages of tribal in the area.
Regarding their visit, media persons were not given any chance to meet with them.
The delegation is scheduled to meet with the state Governor, chief minister, tribal minister and discussed on the status of the tribal people in the state before leaving Imphal tomorrow.
National Commission for Scheduled Castes has a mandate to oversee the social safeguards as provided in Articles 17 , 23 , 24, 25(2)(b) , Educational and Cultural Safeguards as provided in Article 15(4) , Service Safeguards are provided in Article 16(4) , Article 16(4A) , Political Safeguards as provided in Article 164(1) , Article 243(D) provides for reservation in village panchayat and zila Panchayat, Article 243(T) in Municipality provides for reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Article 330 provides reservation of seats for SCs and STs in the Lok Sabha.
Article 332 provides reservation of seats for SCs & STs in State Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assemblies).
Article 334 extends the reservation of these seats on the expiration of a period of 60 years from the commencement of the Constitution.
