Imphal, October 28, 2009:
Threatening to launch any democratic form of agitation against the state government for failing to fulfill the demands of the Senapati District Students Association (SDSA) regarding the deplorable condition of the National Highway-39, the vital lifeline of Manipur, the students' body said on Wednesday that the government has failed to materialise its assurance.
It is pertinent to note that the SDSA had called several agitations including calling indefinite economic blockade along the national highway sometimes back demanding the state government to give attention to the worsening NH-39 condition.
SDSA president A.Pfokrehrii Khrasi warns today that the students' body will not hesitate to launch any democratic form of protest if the NH-39 is not repaired at the earliest time possible.
However, the SDSA did not spell out the deadline for the government to implement the demand.
According to the SDSA chief, the sudents' body held its first executive meeting today in Senapati town and has taken this decision of launching the agitation.
But the SDSA will consult and seek public opinion before carrying out its protest.
Accusing the state government of meting out negligence to the "only life-line" of Manipur, the SDSA said that though ministers, MLAs and even chief minister have been frequently traveling along the NH-39, they are maintaining an indifferent attitude towards this lifeline of the state.
The SDSA terms the attitude of the government as cold and irresponsible.
"Only filling up potholes with mud and clearing the drainage system is not the thing we are demanding.
Our demand is that the government repair the NH-39 in such a condition that the public do not suffer or face difficulty while taking this route," explained A.Pfokrehrii Khrasi.
