Acting on information that the DHD (J) militants had abducted nine labourers of M/S Nayak Construction Company from the camp on January, a joint team of Army stationed at Mahur of the 57 Mountain Division and Assam police swung into action and columns were launched from two directions to tack down the militants, said PIB Defence Wing in a statement today.
On reaching the site, the troops were fired upon by the DHD (J) cadres, said PIB and added that in the ensuing encounter, the militants fled.
The hostages were set free and during a search of the area, the troops recovered three rifle magazines, eighty rounds of assorted ammunition and one Kenwood radio set, said PIB further.
The rescued workers are being treated at Civil Hospital, Mahur.
Further investigations have revealed that the militants were planning to launch an ambush on the highway, said PIB and added that this has been thwarthed.
