Police arrest 6 youths for burning electricity documents

Imphal, August 08 2009:
Defying curfew, sit-in-protests were staged at many places in Imphal East and West districts today in connection with the demand for resignation of O Ibobi from chief ministership and punishment of the police personnel involved in the killing of Ch Sanjit and Rabina Devi and her foetus in 'fake encounter' on July 23 last.
Meanwhile, police today picked up at least six youths in connection with burning down of electricity office at Knogba Bazar on August 5 last.
They were picked at around 11.50 am.

The youths picked by the police were Pangambam Alpha (15) of Kongba Nandeibam Leikai, nongdonbam Bedajit (30), Thongam Ibobi of Kongba Kshetri Leikai, Khumkcham Drambir, Khumukjam Premananda and Ningtohujam Sanathoi.
Showing solidarity to the agitation spearheaded by the Apunba Lup, a sit-in protest was staged at Khurai Thangjam Leikai demanding taking up criminal case by terminating the police commandos involved in the July 23 firing incident that killed two people including a pregnant woman and injured to five others and resignation of the O Ibobi from chief ministership.
A woman leader taking part in the protest speaking to media said they protest will continue till O Ibobi resign from the chief minister post.
At Lamshang Bazar in Imphal west also a sit-in protest was staged by the womenfolk of the area.
As a part of the protest, funeral ceremony of effigies of chief minister in a coffin was performed with a procession.
Protestors also shouted various slogans like "resign chief minister, O Ibobi, award punishment to the killer police commandos and returned to the sit-in protest again.
Later, a team of Lamshang police foiled the protest.
Protestors left the place without giving much resistance to the police.
The same sit-in protest was staged at Singjamei Mongkhang Lambi, Singjamei Thong Bheigyabati Leikai and along the Singjamei-Kongba road organized by womenfolk of the respective areas.
The protests were concluded by shouting slogans decrying killing people in fake encounters.
Police dispersed another sit-in protest staged at Knogba Bazar.
At Sagolband Sayang Kurao Makhong, Heirangoithong, Wangkhei also after staging sit-in protest, effigies of chief minister, O Ibobi, DGP and police commandos were burnt down.
In Moreh town also, a protest torch rally was organized demanding resignation of the chief minister, O Ibobi and dismiss of the police commandos involved in the July 23 firing incident.
