Imphal, January 23:
A company post of the Assam Rifles located at Nambisa village under Chassad-Kamjong sub-division of Ukhrul district was attacked by MPA cadres in the wee hours today.
According to the PRO of Hqs IG AR (S), some unknown armed militants fired two to three rounds of lathode/RPG at the Nambisa post of 1st Assam Rifles of 10 Sector under Hqs IG AR (S) at around 3.45 am today.
Even as the AR troops retaliated, the UG cadres managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness.
There was no casualty or any damage to property on the part of AR troops, claimed the PRO.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by the outfit's Senior Publicity Officer Ksh Yoiheiba informed that the attack launched at about 3.10 am continued till 6 am.
In the attack, three barracks and two bunkers were totally destroyed, claimed Yoiheiba.
Quoting field reports, Yoiheiba asserted that even as the exact number of casualties could not be ascertained, repeated sorties by helicopters to retrieve dead and injured personnel mean that the AR must have suffered large scale casualty.
The assault undertaken by 241 Mobile Battalion of MPA was a part of boycotting the upcoming Republic Day, conveyed Yoiheiba.
All the MPA cadres involved in the armed attack have returned to safe positions, he added.
