Student bodies frame college poll guidelines

Announcing formation of guidelines for the upcoming students' union elections, candidate aspirants have been advised to adhere to the rules to avoid penalty, including forced resignation from their respective designations.
Framing of the guidelines and election code of conduct was conveyed today at a media briefing attended by functionaries of six student organisations such as All Manipur Students' Union, Democratic Students' alliance of Manipur, Manipuri Students' Federation, Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA), Students' Welfare Association of Kangleipak (SWAK) and Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK) at the Tiddim Road office of KSA.
The election guidelines and code of conduct had been arrived at a joint meeting attended by representatives of the six student organisations consequent to the approval for constitution of a Monitoring Cell ahead of the students' union elections.
The guidelines and code of conduct were finalised by the Monitoring Cell, and will come into effect from October 29, informed functionaries of the student bodies at the joint meeting.
As per guidelines announced today, campaigning for the election will be confined to only the campus of the college concerned; use of poster/placard/card will be prohibited at the campus with the exception of a single A3 size poster of the candidate; ban on home campaign, pick-up, organising feasts/tea parties, distribution of money/gifts; restriction on conduct of study tour, picnic, charity shows from October 29 till completion of election process; bar on campaigning by outsiders inside the college campus, etc.
On the otherhand, the Monitoring Cell advocated holding of debate, symposium and other election-related discussion sessions with the active and mandatory participation of the candidates in order to enable the student electors make their choice and the provide the candidates a common platform to prove their mettle and commitment for welfare of the student community.
It was also announced at the joint media briefing that candidates found violating the guidelines will be subjected to punitive action, including forced resignation even if elected.
