Imphal, November 23 2011:
Expressing deep concern over continued armed conflict between armed cadres of NSCN-IM and ZUF in Nungba areas, particularly at Khoupum Valley area, Zeliangrong Union (Assam, Manipur & Nagaland) appealed to both the organisations to abstain from any act that would aggravate suffering of the people of khoupum area.
A ZU (AM&N) statement issued by its general secretary K Poushinglung said clashes between the armed groups in Nungba areas have already claimed the lives of seven people, including one civilian driver and presence of armed cadres of both at Khoupum areas is a cause of concern for the villagers whose normal chores have already been affected severely.
Appreciating the trust bestowed to ZU and other frontal organisations by the Khoupum Area Peace Forum to restore peace in the region, Poushinglung informed that Zeliangrong Elders' Forum of Peace Brokers (Chaguat Phom) has been further urged to initiate reconciliation truce between the warring groups.
It is informed that Chaguat Phom was formed by the ZU (AM&N) in 2006 as an adhoc body for the specific task to bring and maintain peace among the Naga armed groups/outfit in Zeliangrong areas.
The Union reiterated its appeal to both groups to shun from any acts of violence taking into account the need for promoting a conducive environment for the upcoming examinations, approaching Christmas as well as progress being made in the ongoing Indo-Naga peace talk.
