Imphal, June 19 2009: One UG suspect was slain in a reported encounter with Thoubal police commandos at Hayel agricultural field in Thoubal district last night.

According to a press release issued by Thoubal SSP Clay Khongsai, an encounter ensued when Thoubal police commandos, acting on specific information about movement of UG cadres in the surrounding areas of Wangbal and Hayel paddy field, moved in there.

The commandos were laying in ambush on track leading from Moirang Palli to Nepra company and Wangbal Khongnangkhong.

At about 10.15 pm, four persons coming from the paddy field were asked to halt for verification.

But they opened fire towards the commandos who retaliated swiftly resulting in an encounter for about seven minutes.

While one UG suspect was killed on the spot, the other managed to escape away taking advantage of the darkness.

One 9 mm pistol and a magazine containing four live rounds were recovered from the slain individual, added the SSP's release.
