The sixth Khunnai Kanba Numit (Save Society Day) was observed today in commemoration of the day when Irom Chanu Sharmila launched her fast unto death campaign demanding repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 from Manipur.
Sharmila launched her campaign on November 5, 2000 .
The observance was jointly organised by the Kangleipak Loinasillon Apunba Marup (KLAM) and NH 53 Kanglei Ching Tam Leima Lup at Manipur Press Club.
The observance was graced by Director of Kalekhetra Theatre Heisnam Kanhailal, KLAM president Sagolsem Taruni, president of NH 53 Kanglei Ching Tam Leima Lup Thiyam Shilleima Leima and convenor of the Sharmila Kanba Lup, K Taruni Leima as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Giving key-note address of the function, convenor of the organising committee, Rakesh Naorem recalled that Sharmila launched her unprecedented fast unto death campaign against AFSPA three days after 10 people were massacred by security forces at Malom Keithel on November 2, 2000.With the campaign completing nine years, international community has started taking note of Sharmila's campaign.
Saying that the organising committee of the Khunnai Kanba Numit would never accept if any one is claiming that Sharmila launched her campaign on November 2, 2000, Rakesh pledged that the committee is ready to launch movements in support of Sharmila's cause.
