A cultural museum of the Kharam tribe was inaugurated by former Ngamthang Haokip at Kharam Pallel village under Saitu A/C along NH 53 today.
The Government of India recognised Kharams as a Scheduled Tribe on January 8, 2003.Settled at seven villages in different parts of Manipur, the Kharam tribe has a population of 1741. Addressing a meeting at Kharam community hall after inaugurating the cultural museum, Ngamthang Haokip noted that the Kharam tribe is gaining more recognition for successful preservation of its own culture and identity even though it is small community.
He said that plans are afoot to plant trees in the catchment areas of Kharam Pallel in addition to constructing a church at the costs of around Rs one lakh.
Appealing to the people to vote for the Congress candidate in the Lok Sabha elections, Ngamthang said that electing a candidate of a party which would not gain power would not be able to bring development.
The inaugural function, also attended by former Minister Zangamlung Panmei and Z Mangaibou culminated with a cultural programme.
