Rape accused sent to jail

Imphal, October 29 2012: Commando driver Yumnam William (28) of Khagempalli and film actor Thongam Tarun (27) of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai who were accused of raping a school student were produced before the Court of duty Magistrate, Imphal West last night and sent to judicial custody.

The Court remanded them to judicial custody for 13 days.

Driven by an apprehension that producing the duo before Court at day time may invite violent protest agitation and trouble, police produced the duo before the Court last night.

It was reported that the teenage victim was raped by the duo inside a fast food located at Ghari after mixing drugs in snack items on October 20 .

Unaware that the two accused have been already sent to judicial custody, a large number of people waited for the duo at Cheirap Court today.

On learning that the two accused were produced before Court last night, the crowd tried to storm Lamphel police station but no major untoward incident was reported.

The crowd then went to Tarun's house but they were confronted by another group of people of the locality.

The two groups were somehow pacified later.

Both William and Tarun have been remanded to police custody twice earlier and a case has been registered against them at Lamphel police station under IPC Section 366/376/34 .
