Imphal, November 02: Intensifying the counter insurgency operations, two underground activists have been shot dead by the State police in different parts of Imphal East and West today.

While Commandos of Imphal East District shot dead an active member of the proscribed KYKL after a hot chase near the gate of Eastern Students' Club's sports complex at Nongmeibung Nambam Chuthek under Porompat Police Station in the afternoon, their Imphal West counterparts killed another underground activist after a brief encounter at Chingamathak Chongtham Leikai under Singjamei Police Station in the evening.

According to a statement released by SP of Imphal East District L Kailun, the slain KYKL activist has been identified as Leishangthem Shyamsunder alias Ito alias Inaocha s/o Thambaljao of Thoubal Leishangthem.

One hand grenade (Chinese made) was also seized from the possession of the slain UG.

Giving a detailed account of the event, the police officer informed that on receipt of specific information that some cadres of KYKL are moving around New Checkon crossing area, a team of Imphal East Police Commandos in civil dress stationed themselves strategically at New Checkon area with an aim to apprehend them at about 1.10 pm today.

At about 1.30 pm, two persons came from New Lambulane side riding a motorcycle (Pulser, block in colour)) bearing registration number no MN-01N/0815.They were asked by the police team to stop, but instead of stopping, the two youths sped away towards Porompat side.

The police party immediately chased after the two fleeing youths and on reaching Ananda Crossing, they turned right and proceeded towards Nambam Chuthek.

The police party again asked the two youths to stop and when they did not heed the orders, the vehicle of the police party dashed at the motor cycle causing it to fall down along with the two youths.

When the pillion rider got up and ran away from the spot, he was ordered by the police party to stop.

But instead of stopping, he was seen taking out a hand grenade trying to hurled at the pursuing police party.

The police party retaliated and shot him dead.

Subsequently, the motor cycle rider who was later identified as Meinam Ranjan alias Inao (19) s/o late M Iboyaima of Thoubal Awang Leikai but presently staying at Central Jail Quarters near Ist MR.It was during the course of interrogating the arrested youth on the spot that the identity of the deceased was revealed as one Leishangthem Shyamsunder alias Ito alias Inaocha s/o Thambaljao of Thoubal Leishangthem, an active member of KYKL, the SP said.

One Chinese made hand grenade was seized from the possession of the deceased and further verification revealed that he was earlier arrested on March 9, 2005 under FIR no 39 (3)05 of Thoubal Police Station under Section 19 UA (P) Amendments Acts, 2004.The body has been picked up by the police and deposited at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital for post-mortem.

In the second incident, Imphal West Commandos shot dead another underground activist during encounter at Chingamathak Chongtham Leikai under Singjamei Police Station at around 6 pm today.

One 9 mm pistol loaded with three live bullets have been reportedly recovered from the slain underground activist.

According to police reports, three youths were coming together on a motor cycle (Pulser), when the Commandos who were on frisking duty stopped them at Singjamei Thokchom Leikai area at around 5.40 pm today.

But instead of stopping, they tried to speed off while opening fire at the Commandos.

In the process one of the youths fell down from the running motor cycle leading to his death in the encounter.

One 9 mm pistol along with three live ammunition and one magazine have been recovered from the possession of the slain youth.

The identity of the slain suspected UG has not yet been identified.

He was wearing a grey coloured trousers, sky-blue full T-shirt and a pair of sandals.

There were bullet marks on his head.

Singjamei Police picked up the body and deposited it at the mortuary of RIMS for identification.
